McMichigan Cup Results
Eight teams from western Michigan competed for the 2010 Grandville Bulldog McMichigan Cup this past Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Southside Ice Center. Thankyou to every one that came out to support your favorite team! Tournament results are listed below:
Grandville 2 – Manistee 1 (McMichigan Cup Championship Game)
The Bulldogs and Chippewas squared off in the 2010 McMichigan Cup Championship game on Saturday. Grandville’s Alex Stutzky and Manistee’s Austin Wilson were minding their team goals. It was a close game with the Dawgs coming away with the 2-1 win.
Mainistee scored first at 2:20 in the second period. Grandville was able to bounce back 14 seconds later when Stephan flood put it in after some sharp passing by Matt Boogaard and Travis Kamstra. Flood, assisted by Boogaard, scored again at :55 in the third period and that is where the game ended. Both teams played hard and had great goalie play.

Grandville 7 - Reeths Puffer 0

The Bulldogs and Rockets met Friday night in the second round of the McMichigan Cup. Jordan Wood was in goal for Grandville and Eddie Young for Reeths Puffer. In the end Grandville was able to come away with a 7-0 win.
It was a 0-0 game until the Dawgs scored with 6:19 remaining in the period when Alex Stickland put it in off a pass from Sean Conley.
Grandville came on fire in the third and was able to put six on the board:
1) At 3:13 – Stephan Flood from Travis Kamstra and Matt Boogaard (Nice pass from Kamstra)
2) At 4:14 – Matt Boogaard shorthanded unassisted goal flipped over the goalies shoulder
3) At 7:41 – Flood scored again (2nd) coming down the middle off a sharp pass from the corner by Alex Stickland
4) At 11:42 – Corey Giffel buried it off a great pass from Ryan Ihrig
5) At 11:38 – Zack Brower fired one in unassisted
6) At 14:04 – Alex Stickland scored his second (2 goals/1 asisst) off passes from Nate Skoboda and Zach Brower
The Bulldogs play Manistee in the McMichigan Championship game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Grandville 5 - Rockford 1

The Bulldogs and Rams faced off Thursday evening in round one of Grandville’s 2010 McMichigan Cup at Southside Ice Center. The game was also a Tier 1 game for the teams. Alex Stutzkey was in the goal for Grandville and Christian VanPortfliet was in goal for Rockford. The game was again a team effort by Grandville who came away with a 5-1 win.
Grandville scored early in the first period when Stephen Flood found the net assisted by Matt Boogaard and Travis Kamstra. A few minutes later, Rockford put a lot of pressure on the net; however, the Dawgs were able to hold the Rams off.
With 6:09 remaining in the second period the Bulldogs Brenden Giffel fired it in to capitalize on two Ram penalties that gave Grandville a 5 on 3 advantage. Giffel was assisted by Travis Kamstra to put Grandville up 2-0 at the end of two.
At :54 in the third Sean Conley, assisted by Alex Stickland and Conner Higgins, popped the puck over the goalies shoulder to make it 3-0. Two minutes later the Bulldogs scored two shorthanded breakaway goals to make it 5-0. Conley scored his second of the period on a pass from Boogaard. Jake Awrey drove down and shot in the second goal. With 6:29 left in the game the Rams got on the board to make it 5-1 and that is where game ended.
Grandville will play Reeths Puffer and Rockford will play Jenison in the next round. Both games are at 9:00 p.m. on Friday.

Grandville 3 - Forest Hills Central 2
The Grandville Bulldogs played the Forest Hills Central Rangers on Saturday in the championship game of the 2010 Walker Classic. Jordan Wood was minding the net for the Bulldogs and Beau Boonenberg was in goal for the Rangers.
The score was 0-0 after one period with a 1 minor penalty for each team. Grandville played a lot the period in the Forest Hills Central zone; however, they could not get the puck past the Rangers’ Boonenberg.
In the second period the teams traded penalties and Grandville had several chances to score. However, with 4:01 remaining in the period the Rangers’ Trevor Masotta assisted by Cam Pulling and Taylor Preston scored a shorted handed goal to put Central up by 1. The period ended Bulldogs 0 – Rangers 1.
At 1:06 in the third, Conner Higgins slide one in along the post after the face off win by Jake Awrey to tie the game at 1. Three minutes later it was Conner Higgins again this time assisted by Ryan Ihrig and Matt Boogaard to put the Bulldogs up 2-1. With 7:31 remaining in the game the FHC’s Masotta scored his second of the game assisted by Davison and Pulling to tie the game at 2. Grandville came back 18 seconds later to go up 3-2 on a breakaway goal that was buried deep by Stephen Flood after Sean Conley deflected a Matt Boogaard pass up to Flood. The Rangers pulled Boonenberg at the end to make it exciting; however, Grandville stayed strong and came away with the 3-2 win.
Great goalie play by Wood and Boonenburg. And an excellent defensive tournament by Grandville’s Brenden Giffel .

The Grandville Bulldogs and Rockford Rams faced off Friday night in the first game of the 2010 Walker Classic. For the Bulldogs it was the first game of the New Year and the first they have played since December 18th. The Dawgs played well all the way around; defense, offence, power play and penalty kill. Alex Stutzky was in goal and played it tight for Grandville.

Six minutes into the first period, Stephen Flood scored the first goal of the game assisted by Travis Kamstra and Matt Shultz. The Bulldogs then scored two power play goals to make it 3-0 after one. The first was a shot from the blue line with 2:31 remaining in the period by Matt Boogaard with an assist from Kamstra. And the second with 1:54 remaining in the period was put in by Conner Higgins with an assist from Sean Conley.
Six minutes into the second period, Rockford’s Noah Greco put it in the net to put the Rams on the board. With 6:16 remaining on the clock the Dawgs Boogard put it over the goalies shoulder for his second goal with assists from Ihrig and Awrey. This made the score 4-1 Grandville and that is where the period ended.
At 7:28 in the third Grandville was on the power play when Higgins popped one in to put the Bulldogs up 5-1. The Dawgs then did a great job on a 5 on 3 penalty kill and a 5 on 4 penalty kill. With 20 seconds left in the game Rockford scored their second goal and the game finished 5-2 Grandville.

The Grandville Bulldogs and East Kentwood Falcons squared off Friday night at Southside Ice Center for their first conference meeting of the season. The very young and talented East Kentwood team came into Friday’s game 2-0 in conference play with exciting wins over Rockford and Forest Hills Northern/Eastern. The Bulldogs came into the game 1-0 in conference play after a big win over Mona Shores. The game was another great team effort for Grandville who came away with the 4-1 win.
The Bulldogs came out attacking at the beginning of the first period, however, they were not able to make it through the Falcon defense and score until 8:05 in the period. Travis Kamstra, Conner Higgins and Matt Boogaard pressured the net with Kamstra slapping the puck in for the goal and Higgins and Boogaard getting assists. The period ended with a couple of Grandville penalty kills and Grandville up 1-0.
At 7:20 in the second period, while the Bulldogs were on the power play, Grandville’s Alex Stickland pinged one off the post. The Dawgs also had other chances in the second and did not find net until there was 0:42 left in the period. Kamstra sent the puck around the rim to Flood, Flood popped it out to Boogaard who hammered it in to make it 2-0 Grandville. Then, however, with 0:01 on the clock East Kentwood’s Alex Talcott scored after some quick passing by Ian Post and Brett White to make it 2-1 Grandville after 2.
The third period was marked by penalties and tension between the teams. At 3:51 in the period the Bulldogs Alex Stickland sent one in, assisted by Conner Higgins and Travis Kamstra to put Grandville up by 2. Two minutes later while on a penalty kill, Matt Boogaard took the puck, pushed it up the ice and passed to Sean Conley who put it in the back of the net. The Bulldogs also played stingy defense in the third and Alex Stutzky had another excellent game at goalie.
Thanks to all the fans that came out and we look forward to seeing you at 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday (12/16) at Kentwood Arena for a rematch between these to teams!
OK Conference Tier 1 Showcase
Grandville 3 - Mona Shores 2

Game 3 of the 2009 OK Conference High School Hockey Tier 1 Showcase featured the Grandville Bulldogs and the Mona Shores Sailors. It was a grueling game for both teams; they played fast and hit hard. In the end Grandville persisted and came away with a team win. All the Bulldog lines played well and goalie Alex Stutzky had an outstanding game.
With 5:07 left in the first period the Sailors got on the board first when Kyle Hicks’ shot from the circle deflected off a Bulldog defender for the score to put Mona Shores up by 1 after 1. At 5:48 in the second period Austin Zaloga scored to put the Sailors ahead by 2. A minute later Sean Conley punched the puck into the Mona net assisted by Conner Higgins and Alex Stickland for the first Grandville goal. The Bulldogs scored again in the second on a power play goal, when Matt Boogaard shot a one-timer rocket after some precision passing by Flood and Kamstra. It was a determined comeback by the Dawgs that had the score 2 to 2 after 2. There was more exciting hockey from both teams in the third period. Then with 2:34 left, Bulldog Conner Higgins hammered in a goal after some resolute work to keep the puck in the zone by Sean Conley to put Grandville up 3-2. The Sailors pulled their goalie to make it a nail biter at the end, however, the Bulldogs prevailed.

Grandville 4 - Hudsonville 3

Friday evening Southside Ice Center was the scene of another great rivalry game between Grandville and Hudsonville. The first period was a back and forth effort with Grandville getting on the board first with a goal by Travis “TK” Kamstra who was assisted by Boogaard and Flood. Hudsonville’s Parker Host then scored with 36 seconds left in the period to tie the game. Hudsonville came out hitting hard in the second period and scored at 9:50 in the period to go up by one. With 1:36 left Kamstra hit the net again with another assist from Flood to tie the game at 2 after 2. The Bulldogs’ Connor Higgins scored at 6:39 in the third period with an assist from Stephen Flood (his third) to put Grandville in the lead. Then with :33 on the clock Travis Kamstra buried his 3rd goal to put the Bulldog’s up 4-2. Hats off to TK on his 3 goal evening! The Eagles made it close with a goal late in the period. Grandville held on for another great Bulldog win!

Grandville 5 - Kalamazoo Blades 2
After a quick jersey change by the Blades, Grandville came out and scored early with a goal by Stephen Flood assisted by Travis Kamstra and Matt Boogaard. Despite most of the play for the period being in Kalamazoo’s zone, the Blades scored with a minute left in the period to tie the game at 1. The Bulldogs played hard in the second period and went up 4 -1 after two with goals from Jake Awrey, Matt Boogaard, Stephen Flood and assists from Sean Conley, Connor Higgins, Travis Kamstra and Matt Boogaard. Each team scored in the third.
Grandville plays Walled Lake Northern at 3:00 PM Saturday in the Championship game.

Soo Elks Tournament Summary

Grandville 1 – Lakeland 4
The Grandville Bulldogs opened their 2009-2010 season Friday night in the Soo Elks Tournament against the Lakeland Eagles at Pullar Stadium in Sault Ste. Marie. Despite a hard played game, the Bulldogs came away with a with a tough 4-1 loss.
Grandville started slow in the first period and after a couple of penalties for each team the period ended in a 0-0 tie. Despite the determined play of Stephen Flood and a shot off the post by Matt Boogaard the second period was mark by 3 Lakeland goals. Lakeland scored early in the first part of the third on a power play goal. Grandville got on the board with a score by Flood and assist by Boogaard midway through the period.
Grandville 3 – Big Rapids 2 (O/T)
The Bulldogs met Big Rapids on Saturday in a rematch of last year’s Soo Elks Tournament championship game. The first period was a back and forth battle with Big Rapids scoring two quick goals before Stephen Flood scored assisted by Brenden Giffel and Matt Shultz. Grandville came back to tie the game at 2 in the second period with a goal by Travis Kamstra assisted by Flood. The third period was marked by tough defense for both teams and the game end in a 2-2 tie. Alex Stickland assisted by Sean Conley and Conner Higgins scored early in sudden death overtime for the win in another close game between the Bulldogs and Cardinals. This game featured Grandville working hard to come back from a 2-0 deficit in the first period
